As a family who have lived in Hopton for generations (since 1895), we are so pleased to see the progress in acknowledging the history of the battle of Hopton Heath. We look forward to seeing the final memorial. Congratulations on all your hard work.

Newly moved to Hixon I am fascinated and excited that such an historically significant episode happened just down the road. I wish you every success in getting a memorial setup!

Stafford Morris Men created a dance some 25 years ago called the "Battle of Hopton Heath". It has been danced regularly since as our commemoration of the battle. It is danced to the tune "When the King come into his own again".
We have danced it on the battlefield, but that could have been anywhere.
This memorial stone will really make a difference. Well done!

David, as discussed; we would be happy to help out by making a short video of the events on the 7th and 22nd - hopefully we can get an extract shown on local BBC news TV to help with fund raising.

Hi love the site. i am a member of Landor Local history Society ( rugeley) and I have come across a reference to a soldier called Clewley who was killed at the battle. Clewley was a popular name in Rugeley at that time to you know of any documentation relateing to names of soldiers that were involved in the battle.
Many thanks

How about somebody publishing a Grid Reference for the memorial location so people not in the Know can have a walk and find it !

John,

The idea of publishing the Grid Reference for the memorials location and the future interpretation panal is a good one which the West Midlands Branch of the Military Historical Society (WMBMHS)will take up shortly.

However, the WMBMHS are in the process of making an application to Staffordshire County Council to have permanent brown historic monument type signs installed, now that the monument is extant, and the future battlefield interpretation panal phase of the project is well under way.

The Battlefield monument is sited just behing the security fence of MoD No.6 Site, Hopton against the public footpath running from Within Lane to Brick Kiln Lane.

Using the Stafford & Telford Land Ranger Ordnance Survey map scale 1:50000 the Grid Reference is 264943.

I spent most of my teens and early 20's living at Berry Hill Cottage next to the County Showground and walked the Battlefield and hopton Pools many times.

Information about the West Midlands Branch of the Military Historical Societies efforts to raise a monument and interpretation panel to the English Civil War battle of Hopton Heath that was fought on the afternoon of Sunday 19 March 1642/3, and to try to establish an annual re-enactment / living history type event on the nearby Stafford County showground.
